I have been debating with myself whether a blog that tries to cover genealogy, family history, general history and anthropology (the study of the origins of humans) could really be interesting to the amateur genealogist. I have decided to continue covering all aspects because all these things are easily connected.

For example, anthropology could explain some behaviour that has been part of the human nature for thousands of years. There are some behaviours that cross-cultural and religious boundaries are based in our development as a species. For example, a lot of cultures frown on the marriage between close family members.

Events do affect individuals, which affects families. Famines, wars and periods of peace and wealth affect the decisions all of us make every day. When those events have occurred in the past, they are part of history. Knowing about these events whilst researching family history allows you to understand such matters as why your ancestors upped and left for America. Of course some events are more pertinent than others but for example, if an ancestor of yours disappears off the records in 1900, could he have enlisted for the Boer War? You might not consider the Boer War, thousands of miles away relevant but it may well be.

So I will be carrying on as usual and see if I can start some discussions in the near future.

Cheers
